How do clothes matter?\nMOSQUITOES - THE WORLD’S MOST HATED INSECTS\n4.1.\nIf we look at a mosquito, it is very small and does not look scary but this tiny creature can be\na real nuisance. Mosquito bites are irritating and can be painful. Some people are also allergic\nto them. But the biggest problem is that in tropical climates mosquitoes carry diseases, for\nexample malaria, and are responsible for thousands of deaths.\n4.2.\nIt is believed that mosquitoes use their eyes to find victims. They can see very well and their\nkeen sight allows them to find humans easily. Wearing dark-coloured outfits, such as navy blue\nor black is not a good idea because they attract the attention of mosquitoes. Walkers should\nremember to wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers if they don’t want to be bitten.\n4.3.\nMosquitoes have a very good sense of smell, too. They can find their targets by sensing\nthe odour of the sweat we produce. That’s why mosquitoes often attack athletes, who produce\na lot of sweat while exercising. People who jog or exercise outdoors usually have a higher body\ntemperature, which also attracts mosquitoes.\n4.4.\nSo, what about active people who often wear black clothing? What should they do? Mosquitoes\nhate the smell of eucalyptus, peppermint and lemongrass. If you don’t believe in natural\nremedies, you can buy chemicals to spray yourself with. Previously, only some historians and biographers had\nhad access to them. The journals tell readers about Victoria’s meetings with prime ministers,\nprominent politicians, times of war and peace, and the Great Exhibition of 1851, which attracted\nvisitors from around the world. But in my opinion, the most exciting parts are about her\naffection for her husband, especially where she writes about being broken-hearted after his\ndeath in 1861. Their relationship is exceptionally well presented and fascinating to read about.\nThe first diary, which started the journals, was given to Victoria by her mother in 1832 so that\nshe could write about her journey to Wales. Victoria was 13 then. She made a lot of interesting\ncomments during this trip. She wrote the journals for the rest of her life. The last entry is from\n1901, just 10 days before her death.\nOne of the events she described in the journals was her own coronation. She was woken at\n4 a.m. by gun salutes from St James’s Park, and could not get much sleep afterwards because\nof the noise of the people and marching bands. When she was finally dressed in a beautiful\ncoronation gown, the state coach took her to Westminster Abbey. She was deeply moved by\nthe cheering of the people along the route of the procession. She didn’t expect such enthusiasm\nfrom the crowds who had come to see the event.\nShe also wrote about her Diamond Jubilee on 22 June, 1897. She described it as\n“a never-to-be-forgotten day”. Before she left the palace for the celebrations, she wrote,\n“I touched a button by which I started a message which was telegraphed through the whole\nEmpire.” Queen Victoria loved new technology, enjoyed photography and voice recording.\nDuring her reign, electricity was first installed in Buckingham Palace - in the Ball Room in\nMJA-1P\n1883, and between 1883 and 1887 in the rest of the palace. If she lived today, she would\nprobably be willing to tweet about various events.\nThe earliest volumes are in Victoria’s handwriting, and later ones were rewritten by her\ndaughter Beatrice who was instructed by her mother to modify the text by taking out parts that\ncould offend other members of the family. Beatrice spent 40 years rewriting the journals\ncovering the period from 1837 to 1901. Unfortunately for historians, many important fragments\nwere deleted.\nadapted from www.guardian.co.uk\n6.1.
